Documenting hail evidence before it disappears

Hail marks change over time. UV exposure, wind-driven dust, and normal roof traffic can soften or obscure impact marks within weeks, which is why we push to get on the roof as soon as it's safe after a storm. Our documentation includes a full grid walk of every roof section, close-up photos of individual impacts with a scale reference, and a hail-density count per test square where the roof system and damage pattern call for it. On membrane roofs, we also check field seams, flashings, and pipe boots — hail impact near a seam or penetration is more likely to become an active leak than the same impact in an open field.

Where a visual inspection can't settle whether an impact point fractured the membrane or just marked the surface, we can recommend a core sample. That's a judgment call made roof by roof — not every hail hit needs a core cut, but on membranes where surface cosmetic damage and functional damage can look similar, a core sample gives the file something more concrete than a visual opinion.

Cosmetic damage changes surface appearance without breaking the membrane's waterproofing layer. Functional damage fractures the membrane, exposes reinforcing scrim, or splits a mat — changes that affect the roof's ability to shed water. We document both because carriers and manufacturers can treat them differently.

Can hail damage a roof without an immediate leak?

Yes. Hail can bruise membrane, crack coatings, or dent metal without producing an active leak right away. That kind of damage tends to worsen with UV exposure and thermal cycling over the following months, which is why documenting it soon after the storm matters even on a roof that isn't leaking yet.

Do you use core samples to confirm hail damage?

On some membrane types, a core cut can confirm whether an impact point fractured the membrane or only marked the surface. We recommend one when a visual inspection alone can't answer that question, and we log the location and result as part of the claim file.

How soon should we get the roof inspected after a hailstorm?

As soon as it's safe to access the roof. Hail marks are easiest to document while fresh, before UV and additional weather change their appearance, and an early look also catches any active leak points before they cause interior damage.
